Designer Celebration Cakes

Crochet amigurumi tutorials for beginners

About

Designer Celebration Cakes is a free resource for learning crochet amigurumi, the craft of crocheting small stuffed toys. Every guide on the site is written for people who have never crocheted a toy before, or who tried once, lost count somewhere in round four, and put the hook down.

What you will find here

  • Beginner guides that explain the fundamentals: which yarn and hook to use, how to read a pattern, the magic ring, and the basic shapes every toy is built from.
  • Technique tutorials for the skills patterns assume you already have, such as the invisible decrease, color changes, stuffing, shaping, sewing pieces together and embroidering a face.
  • Simple patterns for animals, mini projects, dolls and play food, written round by round.

If you are new, the best place to begin is Amigurumi for Beginners, followed by the guide to the magic ring. The full list of guides is on the Tutorials page.

How the guides are written

Everything on the site uses US crochet terminology, and every abbreviation is explained in the article where it appears. Each pattern line ends with the stitch count for that round, so you can check your work as you go. Hook sizes are given in millimeters and US sizes, and finished sizes are approximate because they depend on your yarn and your tension.

The patterns here are our own simple designs, built from the standard increase and decrease shaping that all amigurumi relies on. The stitch counts of every round are checked for arithmetic before publishing. We do not claim that each design has been test-crocheted in every yarn, so if a round does not work out for you, please tell us and we will correct it.

The images on this site are illustrations drawn to show shapes, pieces and assembly. They are not photographs of finished toys.

We do not publish invented reviews, ratings or testimonials, and we do not copy other designers’ patterns.

Corrections and suggestions

If a step is unclear, a stitch count looks wrong or a link is broken, please tell us through the Contact page. Clear instructions matter more to us than anything else on the site, and corrections are always welcome.
